Justin goes through the instruments, using recordings in the absence of a band, but without the involvement of the microphones, this is purely an approximation. This is to check the integrity of the system and the dynamic range available, as well as to identify any problems that might not be obvious when using your own voice. This is also a good way to check the phase relationship of stereo instruments – especially when being sent to a single wedge – as it’s not immediately obvious when hard-panned in the FOH system
