Wireless really has nothing to do with actual audio, which is one of the reasons many audio engineers struggle with the concept. But it is used almost everywhere – TV, theatre, major sporting events – where there is no tolerance for failure. It all has to work. The numbers soon add up when each person is a mic and and IEMS, which are then doubled up for redundancy. Radio spectrum is a finite resource, so managing the frequencies within a fairly narrow bandwidth becomes really important. If you’re looking for a sound engineering job, consider getting to grips with wireless technology – it is so widely used these days you will always have work! Filmed at PLASA Focus, Leeds, 2014.
